Background of the Study
University campuses are often large and complex, making navigation a challenge for students, staff, and visitors. New students and visitors frequently struggle to locate lecture halls, administrative offices, hostels, and other key facilities, which can lead to wasted time and frustration (Adewale & Yusuf, 2023). Traditional methods of navigation, such as printed maps and verbal directions, are often ineffective, especially for first-time visitors. With the rise of mobile technology, location-based applications have become an essential tool for navigation in large institutions (Chukwuma & Bello, 2024).
A mobile application for campus navigation integrates GPS and interactive mapping technologies to provide real-time directions to users. Such applications have been successfully implemented in various universities worldwide, enhancing mobility and accessibility within campuses (Ogunleye & Ali, 2023). Features such as voice-guided navigation, real-time location sharing, and augmented reality (AR) overlays improve user experience and help users find their destinations efficiently.
At Bayero University, Kano, a campus navigation mobile application could significantly improve movement efficiency, reduce lateness to lectures, and enhance the overall student experience. The app could provide directions to lecture halls, faculty offices, libraries, and other key facilities while also offering additional functionalities such as emergency location tracking, transport routes, and accessibility features for students with disabilities (Usman & Ibrahim, 2024).
Despite the advantages of such an application, challenges such as limited internet connectivity, digital literacy gaps, and potential system inaccuracies must be addressed. This study aims to design and implement a mobile application for campus navigation at Bayero University, Kano, focusing on usability, accuracy, and accessibility.
Navigating a large university campus can be challenging, particularly for new students, visitors, and even faculty members unfamiliar with certain locations. Traditional navigation methods, such as physical maps, signposts, and verbal directions, are often inadequate due to their static nature and inability to provide real-time guidance (Ahmed & Okafor, 2023). This difficulty in navigation can lead to delays, missed lectures, and frustration among students and staff.
In the digital era, mobile applications have become the preferred solution for real-time navigation. However, despite the widespread use of smartphones, Bayero University, Kano, lacks a dedicated mobile navigation application tailored to its campus layout and facilities. Many students and visitors rely on generic map services, such as Google Maps, which often lack detailed, location-specific information about university buildings and points of interest (Bello & Yusuf, 2024).
A well-designed mobile application for campus navigation can address this problem by providing precise directions, real-time updates, and accessibility features for individuals with disabilities. However, challenges such as GPS accuracy, application usability, and integration with university services need to be examined to ensure an effective implementation. This study seeks to develop a mobile navigation application for Bayero University, Kano, and evaluate its impact on campus mobility and user experience.
To develop a mobile application that provides real-time navigation and location-based services within Bayero University, Kano.
To assess the usability, accuracy, and effectiveness of the mobile navigation application in improving campus accessibility.
To identify potential challenges in implementing and adopting the mobile navigation application among students and staff.
How effective is the mobile application in providing real-time campus navigation for students and staff?
What are the usability and accuracy levels of the campus navigation mobile application?
What challenges may hinder the successful implementation and adoption of the application at Bayero University, Kano?
The implementation of a mobile navigation application significantly improves campus accessibility and mobility.
The usability and accuracy of the mobile application positively influence student and staff adoption.
Challenges such as internet connectivity and digital literacy affect the successful implementation of the mobile navigation system.
This study is significant as it explores the role of mobile technology in solving campus navigation challenges. It will benefit students, staff, and visitors by providing an efficient and reliable means of finding locations within Bayero University, Kano. The findings will also guide university administrators in integrating digital solutions for improved campus mobility. Furthermore, the study contributes to the growing body of research on smart campus solutions and mobile-assisted navigation technologies.
This study focuses on the development and implementation of a mobile application for campus navigation at Bayero University, Kano. It examines the app’s effectiveness, usability, and challenges associated with its adoption. The study does not extend to other universities or general-purpose navigation applications. Limitations may include network coverage issues, GPS inaccuracies, and user adoption barriers.
